Development/Public Relations Intern:
Though many study focuses will find this internship helpful, areas of concentration that will best fit this position are business, communications, public relations, graphic design, English and those interested in pursuing a non-profit career. The development/public relations intern will assist the development team in all areas of fundraising practices and analysis with a focus on overall strategy and individual giving. The intern will also assist with the public relations efforts and the creation of graphic design material as needed. They may be doing data entry, prospect research, making thank you calls and provide mail support for annual appeals.
The development/public relations intern will need to display excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint. Communication skills are essential as you may be speaking with donors or prospects. Most importantly, successful applicants must have a genuine interest in all aspects of fundraising. Generally, we have one position in our Lancaster office and one in our Blue Bell office though not all are offered each semester.
Our writing internship will best fit those students with an English, writing or journalism major. An important aspect of this intern’s work will be interviewing wish families after their wish experience and writing wish stories for use in fundraising materials, general awareness and donor stewardship. EXCELLENT storytelling and phone skills are required. We are looking for a talent for telling stories in addition to superior writing skills. This intern may be asked to conduct interviews at a time that is best suited for the wish family and therefore may perform some duties outside of the office. This position is very flexible and can accommodate a varied schedule. Please submit a writing sample when applying for this position.
Our events internship will best fit those students with a Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising or Graphic Design major. An interest in planning large scale events, working in the nonprofit sector or having completed coursework in event planning is preferred. This intern position will assist the Events Manager with various aspects of planning, strategizing and promoting the Walk for Wishes held in Harrisburg and Philadelphia. In addition, this intern position will assist with the target outreach for our Kids for Wish Kids program. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Publisher, excellent computer and communication skills are essential.
This position does not directly plan wishes or interact directly with wish kids. Our volunteer/program internship will suit nearly every area of focus, though those that are most appropriate include communications, hospitality, general liberal arts, business and education. This intern primarily assists the volunteer coordinator and the program team in planning volunteer trainings, wish administration, data entry and pre-screening families. Excellent administrative, phone and written communication skills are ESSENTIAL. This intern may be expected to attend training sessions and participate in session planning as well. Spanish language skills are helpful.
In addition to the duties described above, all interns will help out with various other day to day tasks that support the entire Make-A-Wish team.
Applicants for any internship are expected to possess the following skills:

- Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
- Spanish speaking a plus, but not required
